For exports, a CFS can receive separate consignments and prepare them for consolidation into a container. For imports, it can receive a container, unload the combined cargo, and make each consignment available for the next authorized handoff. The facility therefore connects inland transportation with the ocean leg while helping maintain control over cargo, records, and releases.

Why container freight stations are used

How the export CFS process works

2. Delivery and receiving

3. Staging and consolidation
Accepted freight is staged until the planned consolidation. The operator must consider the container plan and the physical compatibility of cargo. Heavy freight, fragile goods, non-stackable units, hazardous materials, and goods with special handling needs cannot simply be placed wherever space appears available.
4. Container loading and onward movement
The selected consignments are loaded and secured in the container. The container is then closed and moved into the port and vessel network according to the transportation plan.
How the import CFS process works
1. Arrival and facility transfer
After the vessel arrives, the container must complete the required port and regulatory steps before it can move to the destination CFS or be made available there. Port operations, container availability, customs status, facility transfer, and unloading can all affect timing.
2. Deconsolidation
At the CFS, the container is opened and the combined load is separated into its individual consignments. Staff check marks and references, note visible exceptions as required by facility procedure, and place cargo in the appropriate staging area.
3. Release requirements
Before a consignment can leave, the relevant parties must satisfy the release conditions. CFS vs warehouse: what is the difference?

Parties commonly need references that tie the cargo to the booking and transport documents, a precise commodity description, the number and type of handling units, gross weight, final packaged dimensions, shipper and consignee details, and marks that match the physical freight.

Document discrepancies can become physical delays. How to prepare freight for a CFS
- Package for the full route. Freight may experience truck movement, facility handling, container loading, an ocean voyage, unloading, and another inland trip. Packaging should suit the commodity and those expected conditions.
- Create stable handling units. Secure cargo to sound pallets or use suitable crates or other bases. Protect edges and projections, avoid unsupported overhang, and disclose whether units can be stacked.
- Measure after packaging. Record maximum length, width, height, and gross weight for each unit after wrapping, bracing, or crating is complete.
- Label consistently. Apply durable, readable marks requested in the shipping instructions to every unit. Remove or cover obsolete labels that could cause confusion.
- Disclose special characteristics. Hazardous materials, batteries, temperature-sensitive goods, unusually heavy pieces, or other regulated and difficult cargo may need advance approval and special handling.

Start by identifying who selected the facility and who is responsible for each leg. Ask for the exact address, receiving window, cargo and document cutoffs, required references, and proof-of-delivery procedure. For an import, confirm who will notify you of availability and which separate releases must be complete before pickup.
Ask what services are included and what may require separate authorization. Confirm how exceptions such as a count discrepancy, visible damage, customs hold, missed cutoff, or delayed pickup will be reported and who has authority to give instructions.
