Freight Class Explained: A Practical Guide for LTL Shippers

Learn how NMFC freight class works, what density, handling, stowability, and liability mean, and how to document an LTL shipment accurately.

What is freight class?

Freight class is a standardized way to describe the transportation characteristics of commodities moving by less-than-truckload (LTL) service. The National Motor Freight Classification, or NMFC, assigns freight to classes ranging from 50 to 500. Those classes give shippers, carriers, and logistics providers a shared framework for planning and rating freight that will share trailer space with other shipments.

Class is not a general score for whether cargo is good, valuable, or difficult. It reflects how the commodity and its shipping form affect transportation. Density is central to many classifications, while handling, stowability, and liability can also matter. The applicable NMFC item and its instructions determine how those characteristics are used for a particular commodity.

Why accurate LTL freight classification matters

An LTL carrier combines shipments with different sizes, weights, packaging, and handling needs. Accurate classification helps describe the space and operational demands each shipment brings to that shared network. It also supports consistent shipment records and rating.

An incorrect class can cause a quote and the final transportation record to differ. A carrier may inspect or measure freight and update the shipment details when the tendered cargo does not match the description. That can lead to reclassification, corrected paperwork, questions, or delay. Accuracy at the start is more useful than choosing a class because it produced a preferred estimate.

The shipper remains responsible for providing a truthful commodity description, packaged dimensions, weight, handling-unit count, and other requested information. A carrier, broker, or classification resource can help interpret the rules, but it cannot correct measurements that were never taken or special characteristics that were not disclosed.

The four freight class factors

Density

Density describes weight relative to occupied space. For a rectangular handling unit, measure the greatest packaged length, width, and height, including the pallet, wrapping, projections, and anything else that occupies trailer space. Multiply those dimensions to find cubic inches, divide by 1,728 to find cubic feet, and divide the gross weight in pounds by the cubic feet.

For example, a pallet measuring 48 by 40 by 48 inches occupies 53.33 cubic feet. If the complete pallet weighs 800 pounds, its density is about 15 pounds per cubic foot. This calculation is only an input. It does not independently prove the applicable class, because the correct NMFC item may include other rules or transportation characteristics.

Handling

Handling considers how readily freight can be moved through terminals and between trailers. A stable pallet that accepts ordinary material-handling equipment presents a different task from a long, irregular, top-heavy, fragile, or loose piece. The need for special equipment, extra labor, or unusual care may be relevant.

Packaging can change the handling profile. Unitizing cartons on a sound pallet may create a more stable handling unit, while unsupported overhang or an unsuitable base can make movement harder. Package freight for its actual route and disclose limitations instead of assuming a label will solve them.

Stowability

Stowability concerns how effectively freight can share trailer space. Shape, dimensions, compatibility, stackability, and restrictions all affect how a unit can be positioned. A regular, stackable unit is generally easier to plan around than freight that cannot support another load, has protruding parts, or must be isolated from other cargo.

“Do not stack” is operational information, not merely a sticker preference. If a unit cannot safely bear freight above it, the carrier may lose usable vertical space. Likewise, hazardous or otherwise incompatible commodities can create placement restrictions that should be identified through the appropriate process.

Liability

Liability addresses transportation risk associated with the commodity. Relevant concerns can include susceptibility to damage, potential to damage other freight, perishability, theft exposure, and value relative to weight. This factor does not replace cargo insurance, carrier liability terms, declared-value procedures, or careful packaging.

Use a specific, accurate commodity description. Generic labels such as “parts,” “equipment,” or “general merchandise” may not reveal the characteristics needed to identify the proper item. If a shipment contains regulated material or has unusual value or sensitivity, follow the carrier’s disclosure and acceptance requirements.

How to determine freight class step by step

1. Identify the commodity precisely

Start with what the product actually is, what it is made from, and the form in which it ships. Similar-looking products can fall under different NMFC provisions, while one item may contain density-based subprovisions. Avoid selecting a listing solely because its wording seems close.

2. Describe the final shipping unit

Record whether the freight is boxed, crated, drummed, bundled, or palletized. Note the number of handling units, whether they can be stacked, and any unusual shape, fragility, or handling restriction. Classification is based on the freight tendered for transportation, so unfinished packing data is not enough.

3. Measure and weigh the packaged freight

Measure every unit at its maximum outside points after packing is complete. Use the gross weight, including the pallet, crate, wrap, bracing, and product. Do not rely on catalog dimensions for the unboxed item. Accurate final dimensions and weight support both density calculation and carrier planning.

4. Find the current NMFC item and subprovision

Use a current classification resource and read the complete item description, packaging rules, notes, and subprovisions. NMFC provisions can change. In July 2025, NMFTA implemented a broader standardized density approach for many commodities without special handling, stowability, or liability concerns, so an old item number or habitual class should not be assumed to remain correct. 5. Confirm the result before tender

If the commodity does not fit a listing clearly, the units have mixed products, or special characteristics apply, ask the carrier or a qualified classification resource for guidance before pickup. Keep the measurements, weight record, product description, and classification reference with the shipment file.

Mixed pallets and multiple handling units

A mixed pallet does not automatically take one class just because the products are wrapped together. The applicable treatment depends on the commodities, their NMFC provisions, the shipment arrangement, and the carrier’s rules. List the contents accurately and obtain guidance when different items or classes share a handling unit.

Measure and weigh multiple units individually when requested, especially when their sizes or contents differ. A total weight divided by the combined cube can hide a light, bulky unit behind a compact, heavy one. Individual data also helps the carrier plan trailer space and verify what was tendered.

If packaging changes between repeat shipments, revisit the measurements and classification inputs. Adding a crate, changing pallet height, allowing overhang, or making a unit non-stackable can change its transportation profile even when the product itself is unchanged.

Common freight classification mistakes

  • Reusing an old class without checking the current item. Classification provisions and subprovisions can change.
  • Measuring only the product. The full packaged unit, including its pallet and projections, occupies trailer space.
  • Using net weight instead of gross weight. Packaging and the handling base travel with the commodity.
  • Assuming density always decides the class. Handling, stowability, liability, item notes, and packaging rules may affect the result.
  • Choosing a vague commodity description. Precise descriptions make it easier to identify the appropriate NMFC item and review exceptions.
  • Ignoring stackability or special handling. Operational restrictions should be disclosed during planning, not discovered at the dock.
  • Treating a quote as verification. A rate based on estimated or incomplete data does not validate the classification.

A practical pre-pickup checklist

  • Confirm the exact commodity and material or product type.
  • Finish all wrapping, crating, palletizing, and bracing before measuring.
  • Record maximum length, width, height, and gross weight for each unit.
  • Document the handling-unit count and packaging type.
  • State whether each unit is stackable and disclose unusual handling needs.
  • Look up the current NMFC item, subprovision, and class using current information.
  • Place consistent information on the shipping instructions and bill of lading.
  • Save supporting measurements and classification notes for later review.

Physical preparation and classification are connected, but they are not the same task. Stable packaging supports safe handling, while the current NMFC provision determines how the shipment is classified.
